Benefits of Training with and without the Jiu Jitsu Gi
The major difference in fighting Jiu jitsu without the gi, it will be a much more technical fight. When you are wearing a jiu jitsu gi, you will have a lot more chances to slow down your opponent; This is when you can use the jiu jitsu gi to your advantage.
You will definitely have better control over your opening moves, tying up different points of your opponents body which can set you up for the following technical situations.
A proper submission in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, whether it is an arm lock, knee bar or whatever, is a result of proper control, that is where jiu jitsu gi can be most valuable, using it to control your opponent.
It is always best to test new technique in a controlled environment, imagine being attacked in the street...It could be winter time and your attacker could be wearing a jacket... It could be summer time... Maybe your attacker could be wearing a t-shirt or no shirt at all, always best to be ready for any situation.
When you are not wearing a jiu jitsu gi, you have to use lots of strength and speed, now it is not just technical, now you will have a much more physical match, many of the techniques in Brazilian jiu jitsu will be difficult to apply and in some cases … Impossible!
The number of chokes are severely limited, arm - bars are much harder to get as you lose much of the tightness that comes with fighting someone wearing a jiu jitsu gi, the body will be much more slippery and sweaty, so there are definitely some negatives in not wearing the gi, but there are always advantages to every situation.
I think it is important to spend some time training jiu jitsu without the gi on, it will take you out of your comfort zone and force you to think of other ways to control your opponent, you won\t have the luxury of holding the jiu jitsu gi to slow down your opponent.
These same jiu jitsu techniques you can apply without the gi, you can apply later fighting while wearing the gi, giving you some other options for controlling the fight, you will be amazed how many more options will become open to you, having something to finally hold onto!
So get out there and spend at least 10% of your training time without your jiu jitsu gi on! Do it in the summer months when it’s too hot anyway... You won’t be sorry!
